They can be made of many different materials, but the superior choice is concrete, in that it provides the best support for vertical gravity loads and horizontal sliding. Poured concrete walls have a strength that far surpasses that of block-based foundations, putting them well beyond required safety standards. The increased density and resultant strength of steel-reinforced concrete foundations makes them resistant to water and almost maintenance-free.
